About Scotia Slate

Our History

Scotia Slate Inc. is a slate quarry and fabricator located in Nova Scotia, Canada. Our slate bedrock was discovered during the 1850s Nova Scotia Gold Rush and our first mill was constructed in 1855 to quarry and fabricate roofing shingles.

Since this time premium slate building materials have been harvested and fabricated from the Scotia Slate quarry, offering some of the highest-quality natural slate products in the world.

Our Stone

Nova Scotia is one of only two places on earth yielding a true multicolour slate palette — deep blues, soft greens, classic greys, and natural browns — each piece hand-split and hand-finished, so no two are ever quite alike.

Dense, low-absorption, and proven against the North Atlantic's harshest conditions, our slate is built to outlast the buildings it's part of.

Our slate is quarried from stone belonging to the Halifax Group of the Meguma terrane — seafloor mud laid down 480 to 540 million years ago and hardened through the same mountain-building forces that shaped Atlantic Canada, placing it in the same geological age class as Wales's celebrated Cambrian slate.

The natural cleft surface of our stone delivers a textural, non-slip finish, while the material itself offers durability, non-combustibility, natural beauty, and resistance to weathering. This combination of performance characteristics ensures our products serve clients for generations, not years.

We provide custom-cut slate and natural stone flooring for commercial and residential projects including multi-family residential, healthcare, hospitality, colleges and universities, and large civic projects.

Product Testing

It is important that the material being extracted from the quarry meets high standards. The American Society for Testing and Materials International (ASTM) has tested our product in various categories such as Absorption, Strength, Abrasion resistance, Acid resistance, and Coefficient of friction. The results were high marks in all categories, reflecting competitive quality in our product.
