Natural slate, quarried straight from the earth with none of the processing or chemical inputs found in manufactured building materials, is one of the strongest material choices a project team can make when LEED credits are on the table.

The case for natural slate starts with a simple principle: the most environmentally friendly material is the one that never needs to be replaced. Slate is dense, low-absorption, and extraordinarily durable — properties borne out in ASTM testing for absorption, strength, abrasion resistance, acid resistance, and friction, not marketing claims. Unlike manufactured stone, composite, or petroleum-based products, natural slate contains no resins, no added chemicals, and no ingredients that off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It comes out of the ground essentially ready to be cut and finished.
That combination of longevity and unprocessed composition is exactly what LEED's material-focused credits are designed to reward.

The exact point values and requirements depend on the LEED rating system and version a project is pursuing, so this isn't a substitute for your project's LEED AP — but it does mean natural slate belongs in the conversation early, not as an afterthought.
It's worth putting the durability argument in context. A well-installed natural slate roof can last well over a hundred years, compared to fifteen to twenty for many conventional roofing materials — and that same durability principle carries through everything quarried from the same bedrock, from flooring to exterior paving to wall cladding. A material that isn't being torn out and replaced every couple of decades isn't generating the material waste, manufacturing emissions, or labor cost of repeated replacement. That's sustainability in the most literal sense: less consumed, less discarded, over a much longer timeline.
